Péter Klein

Péter Klein (Miskolc, 1980) is a Hungarian designer, design leader and community organizer. He is the founder of Blue Digital Studio Kft. (BLVE), co-organizer of UX Budapest and founder of UX Naptár (UX Calendar).^[1] His career began in 1999 as an architectural CAD draughtsman; he has worked for the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), GE Healthcare, BKK and Inceptech (McKinsey Digital). Since 2022 he has run his own studio, which works in service design, UX and digital accessibility.

His work has two constant threads: the design maturity of organizations, that is, how design becomes decision-making within an organization, and access, from accessibility to neuroinclusion. Between 2022 and 2026 he hosted 52 UX Budapest events, with 3,542 registered participants in total.^[2] He teaches in university and commercial training programs (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design – MOME, Budapest University of Technology and Economics – BME, Eötvös Loránd University – ELTE, xLabs), and regularly gives talks at professional conferences in Hungary. He has built and led three training and incubation programs.

Career

Beginnings (1999–2016)

From 1999 to 2006 he worked as an architectural CAD draughtsman at RÉGIÓ Városépítészeti és Műemléki Tervező Kft. (an urban architecture and heritage design firm) in Miskolc, where he produced urban planning drawings, including for the regional spatial plans of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Heves counties. From 2006 he handled magazine, print and web work at INFORM MÉDIA Kft.

From 2008 to 2016 he was a designer, and later senior web designer, at Pressflex Kft. and Blogads.com. The two company names denote a single operation: the business of American founder Henry Copeland, whose Budapest office was its second site. Blogads launched in 2002 and, by its own description, became the first platform for self-service content advertising in social media.^[7] Péter Klein's work ranged from wireframes and prototypes to frontend, and later to responsive design and motion interfaces.

Sites using the system included TechCrunch, Gothamist, Perez Hilton, Daily Kos, Talking Points Memo, Metafilter, Stereogum and Andrew Sullivan's blog.^[7] The interface of ABC's “GCB” campaign running on PerezHilton.com received an IAC Award in 2013, in the “Best Advertising Online Ad” category. Pressflex Kft. still operates, in Budapest and in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.^[8]

From 2015 to 2016 he worked as a web design consultant at the Vienna headquarters of the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Corporate years (2016–2022)

In 2016 he joined GE Digital as a senior interaction designer, working on the Predix industrial IoT platform. From 2017 to 2020 he was one of the lead product designers at GE Healthcare. Over his four years at GE he worked on nine products: Edison Developer Portal, Athlete Management Solution, Advanced Visualization, DoseWatch, Zero Footprint Viewer, Elements Design System, LabCloud, Plant Pulse Optimizer and Enterprise Imaging.^[18] For the DoseWatch radiation dose system he carried out user research in Japan and Milan. The International Olympic Committee's system called Athlete Management Solution is an electronic health record in which doctors access the medical, venue and sport-specific data of Olympic participants and track their treatment. The system was built by the Budapest team, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang it handled the data of 2,900 athletes. In parallel, from 2017 to 2019 he worked as product manager on the CASSIS system, which combined machine translation, artificial intelligence and translation support tools to give real-time assistance to simultaneous interpreters. From 2019 to 2020 he was Vice President of Education (VP Education) of GE's Budapest Toastmasters club.

From November 2020 to April 2021 he was product manager at BKK (Budapest Transport Centre): he was responsible for the mobile ticket, the Futár+ app, the fare structure and the MaaS journey planner, together with building the product strategy and the product organization. In 2021 he worked on product strategy at the Budapest studio of Inceptech (McKinsey Digital). From 2021 to 2023 he was design director at Exalt Interactive, where he also led the internal designer incubator, and from 2021 to 2022 he was UX consultant to the four-person design team of a Budapest software development company, with the mentoring continuing until 2024. In parallel he worked at xLaboratories in three consecutive roles: first as mentor and instructor (2020), then as lead responsible for the UX course curriculum (2020–2022), and finally as head of the entire UX design area (2022–2023).

Independent studio (2022–)

In November 2022 he founded Blue Digital Studio (BLVE), where he works as a strategic consultant. The studio works for enterprise product teams and startups: user research, service design, UX and digital accessibility, as well as running incubation programs, leadership development and supporting nonprofit organizations. The studio also works on compliance with the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and on measurement against WCAG, with live testing involving participants with disabilities.

From April 2023 to April 2024 he was training and development manager at MOME, where he led the strategy for the university's e-learning platform. In 2025 he held a design leadership workshop at a Hungarian telecommunications provider and then mentored the company's design leaders for six months; in the same year he supported the work of a large bank's UX leaders.^[3]

Community involvement

Since December 2021 he has been a co-organizer of UX Budapest. The community has been active since 2011; its calendar lists 147 events up to mid-2026.^[2] Of these, 52 events ran with him as host, from March 2022 to May 2026, with a total of 3,542 registered participants. Formats in the series include meetups, breakfast conversations, portfolio review evenings, the outdoor “UX-pokróc” (UX blanket), quiz nights and workshops. The venues vary as well: there was an event on a Danube boat (2023), in a teahouse (2024), a season-opening mulled wine gathering (2023), and a hike in the Buda Hills under the name “UX Explorer’s Expedition” (2023). In 2026 a charitable team-building day was held at the school of the children's home in Bicske.

In 2023 he launched UX Naptár (uxnaptar.hu), a hub for design and UX events in Hungary. Since 2024 he has been a co-organizer and board member of the global 24 Hours of UX event. Since 2023 he has hosted the Budapest Accessibility Meetup together with Károly Szántai and Árpád Nagy; the series brings digital accessibility into a practical workshop format. The UX Budapest community has more than 4,500 Facebook members and more than 4,000 Meetup members.

A recurring form of his community work is the Social Design Jam: several dozen designers and civil society organizations work together over a weekend on real social problems.

From 2025 to 2026 he was strategic advisor to Appy Nonprofit Zrt., working alongside the leadership team of an umbrella organization of civil society organizations, which grew from 28 to 35 member organizations during this period. The work focused on strategic direction, organizational capacity and measurable social impact. The joint work started with the leaders of six civil society organizations, covering self-awareness, organizational development, impact measurement and the biosystemic approach. At the participants' request it became a regular monthly intervision, which has continued since.^[16] From 2026 he takes part in the work of the Design-összefogás HU initiative, where he works on developing the entity model and the charter.

A significant part of his community work is unpaid. This includes the advisory role with Appy Nonprofit Zrt., the Social Design Jam held together with civil society organizations, the team-building day at the school of the children's home in Bicske, and the Social Design Framework, a service design handbook written for civil society organizations. He also mentors on the international ADPList platform, where mentoring is free of charge for the mentee: his public profile shows 40 completed sessions and 1,205 minutes of mentoring time, with a 100 percent attendance rate.^[26]

Training and incubation programs

A recurring form of his work is that he builds a system in which others then deliver. This pattern played out in three consecutive engagements, each with the same structure: framework, cohort, mentor layer, measurable output.

Exalt incubator (2020–2023)

An internal talent program at a design agency of 15–40 people, which he was invited to lead professionally; the program ran under the name Excellence Programme.^[10] Three years, three cohorts, twelve designers: career starters and career changers developed into mid-level UX/UI designers, on live projects. The program accounted for approximately 2,100 logged hours and 262 dedicated working days, about seventy percent of three years of working time. The methodology developed here became the basis of his later design leadership work.

xLabs UX course (2020–2023)

He was first responsible for the course curriculum, and then became head of the entire UX area. As professional lead of the 2021 project-based course, he built the course's operating structure. The program's alumni network later became a resource in its own right: several of the participants returned as mentors in paid engagements.

MVM Edison mentor program (2024–2025)

He ran the mentor layer of the MVM Edison innovation startup program in two roles. In 2024 he was the owner of the program's mentor framework: he organized eight guest speakers, three external experts and three alumni mentors into one system, and delivery was largely carried out by this system.

In the 2025 cohort he worked among the program's mentors and guest speakers. The cycle of nearly six months, starting in April, took six startups from organizational development through strategic focusing to prototype; Péter Klein is listed first among the publicly named mentors.^[14] One of the teams, Carbon.Crane, which makes the carbon footprint of digital services measurable, advanced to the second stage of the program at the mid-term demo day in July 2025.^[13]

Teaching and mentoring

Since 2020 he has regularly taught in university and commercial training programs. At xLaboratories he was first responsible for the UX course curriculum, and then became head of the training area. At the Department of Ergonomics and Psychology of BME he was a guest lecturer and a member of the TDK (Students' Scientific Conference) jury; at MOME he was training manager, mentor and opponent (reviewer) of master's theses.

In 2024 MOME Open announced the Design Leadership Program, which he designed together with Dániel Sági Kiss. The eight-week program was built on a structure repeated weekly: a ninety-minute online group conversation, a thirty-minute individual consultation and a four-hour in-person workshop, following Tuckman's stages of group development. As guests of the weekly fireside conversations, the published timetable listed Zoltán Kollin (IBM Budapest Lab), Viktória Barcsi, Anna Kincses, Norbert Krizsán (Mito Digital), Csongor Fábián and Krisztina Kanizsai (Genesys).^[23]

Talks

Since 2019 he has regularly appeared at professional conferences and meetups in Hungary, as a speaker, panelist or workshop facilitator. His recurring topics are design leadership, the relationship between artificial intelligence and service design, and the mental health of designers. The list below is a selection of datable appearances.

The recurring backbone of his talks is the Design Leader Person framework, which has three propositions: a product's flaws often reflect the organization's problems; an organization's culture and structure are shaped by the qualities of its leader; and the leader's effectiveness stems from personal development and self-awareness.

Professional approach

He describes his work as that of an integrator: he treats design as the intersection of other systems. He calls his own framework Human Capacity Design: its starting point is that human capacity is a finite system, and performance follows from the state of that system. The approach connects four layers: nervous-system regulation, developmental psychology, organizational theory and design leadership.

Part of this background is formal: from 2023 to 2025 he completed a biosystemic somatic psychotherapy training accredited by the European Association for Body Psychotherapy (EABP); from the second year of the training he also conducted therapy independently. A recurring proposition of his is that „a problémának nem az ellentéte a megoldás" (“the opposite of the problem is not the solution”). The answer usually lies in the mechanism that sustains the impasse.

The Klein Method

He has organized his practical work into a four-step, facilitated decision method, which he calls the Klein Method. It was designed for situations where many people know many different things and, as a result, decision-making stalls. Its structure is independent of the subject matter: the same four steps run in an accessibility audit, an organizational diagnosis, a training program and an implementation.

Each step has a completion condition:

• Map. Done when participants point, on their own map, to something they previously understood differently.
• Priority. Done when it can be justified which of two findings matters more.
• Decision. Done when the client decides on the basis of the finding.
• Re-measurement. Done when the effect of the decision has been measured on the number recorded before the decision.

The fourth step is the one most often omitted in practice, because the contract ends at delivery. According to Péter Klein, it is precisely this step that validates the other three.

Musical career

Before and alongside his design career he played music in the Hungarian metal scene. He played in Miskolc from his teens; he was involved in more than ten bands, on guitar, bass guitar and vocals, in some as a permanent member and in others as a session guitarist. In the doom metal band Dead Monuments he covered all three roles from 1996, and he recorded, mixed and mastered the band's 2002 demo and designed its cover.^[4]

His recurring bandmate is drummer Róbert Mester, with whom he played in four bands (Neural Booster, The Quintessence, Whaka Danger, Darktempered); his earliest permanent partner was József Székely, with whom he co-wrote the songs of Dead Monuments. All three also played in Frost from Kazincbarcika, in different years.^[17] Darktempered was previously called SatanicART. The song I Am True from the band's …from Hell demo was featured in the short film Reset the Film, made by the Magyar Filmesek Tábora (Hungarian Filmmakers' Camp) for the 2007 AXN–UPC film festival. The second demo, MYA, was praised by Nuskull Magazin in 2008.^[19] In the Budapest band Bornholm he played as a session guitarist under the name Sadogoat, and left the band in early 2006; Fémforgács reported his departure in April.^[20] The band's member listings from that period record his stage name together with his civil name.^[21] With his bands he completed three dated tours: in 2003 in the Balkans and Europe, in 2010 via Košice (Kassa) and Lviv, and in 2014 in Poland.

He also produced album covers and sound recordings for other artists: he is credited with the recording and the cover of Carcharoth's 2004 album Ceremony of Free Spirit,^[5] and with the cover artwork of the Miskolc band Rotor's 2007 album Acélba zárva.^[6]

Forms of collaboration

His work is available in three forms, all of which start from the same approach: first a diagnosis of the situation, then the intervention.

• Organizational work with the studio. User research, service design, UX design and accessibility audits for enterprise product teams, with the Blue Digital Studio team. This includes measuring EAA compliance and live testing with participants with disabilities.
• Leadership support. Mentoring for design and product leaders, part-time design leadership, and design clinics for teams. The regular programs run on the designleadership.hu site.
• Programs and training. Building and running internal training and incubation programs, corporate workshops, conference talks and facilitation, in Hungarian and English.

Named joint work

Part of his work is co-authored, and this is also recorded in the other party's public sources. With organizational developer Csongor Fábián he worked on two engagements in 2023: at COMET Studios on redrawing the design team's role and responsibilities, and at Zwoelf Agency as co-mentor on a branding impasse. Both are named in Fábián's portfolio.^[24] With neuroinclusive designer Eszter Daniss-Bodó he works on accessibility; their joint conversation, on how a product's flaws reflect the organization's flaws, was published on fintech.hu in January 2026.^[25] He designed the MOME Open design leadership program with Dániel Sági Kiss.^[23]

Writing

He publishes regularly. Longer analyses appear in his Substack newsletter Human Capacity, shorter pieces and professional posts on LinkedIn; his earlier articles are available on Medium.^[9] Recurring themes are how design organizations work, community design and human capacity.

Personal life and other activities

He grew up in Miskolc and now lives in Budapest. Besides music, he is occupied by long-distance endurance sports: he has completed the thousand kilometres of the El Camino, the Kinizsi 100, a half-distance Ironman and an Olympic-distance triathlon. At GE he was the organizer of the Budapest Triathlon Team.^[18] He himself draws a parallel between these forms of endurance and his professional work: both require long, steady effort.

In 2006 he received the special prize of the Egri Filmfesztivál (Eger Film Festival) for the short film Red. His interest in visual creation led from album covers through film to design.
